Are you an author? I have many works in progress, but I haven’t finished or published anything.
Favorite Genres: Science fiction, fantasy, crime, mystery, and horror.
Favorite Book: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I was given the book as a gift when I was a kid, and it was one of the first books I ever read. It’s always stuck with me as being special.
Favorite Authors: My favourite authors have always been Dante Alighieri, Franz Kafka, Edgar Allen Poe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. It’s hard not to love the classics when you’re studying English literature in university. Now that I’m reading more modern works, I’m partial to Rob Boffard, Tyner Gillies, and Trevor Melanson.
Genres/Material you will not read: Erotica
Your approach to beta reading: As a professional editor, I approach beta reading similar to how I would approach a substantive edit. I take notes and make comments about the big ideas and spots in the manuscript that made me laugh, cry, or that otherwise evoked strong emotion. I work with those big ideas to provide useful feedback for the parts that worked well and the parts that may need some improvement.
Something you want authors to know: I know it’s not always easy to give your manuscript that you’ve worked so hard on to a stranger to read and comment on. I’m appreciative of the work you’ve done, and the feedback I give is only to help you put your best work forward. If you ever have any questions about the comments or suggestions I’ve made, I’m willing to talk it over with you.
